The full answer

The €500,000 is an actual investment, not a fee paid to obtain residency. You acquire units or shares in a qualifying collective investment vehicle and your capital is invested according to that vehicle's strategy. For Golden Visa eligibility, the vehicle must be established under Portuguese law, be non-real-estate, have a maturity of at least five years at the time of investment and invest at least 60% of its portfolio in companies headquartered in Portugal.
Immigration eligibility and investment quality are two separate questions. Before investing, you should understand the manager, strategy, underlying assets, fees, liquidity, maturity, risk profile and potential exit. Portuguese collective investment vehicles operate within a regulated framework overseen by the CMVM, but regulation does not guarantee capital preservation or returns.
The investment must also continue to satisfy the Golden Visa requirements for as long as you rely on it to renew the permit. At Plural, we therefore believe the immigration objective and the investment decision should be assessed together, while recognising that every investment involves risk and returns are never guaranteed.
