On the qualifying fund route, the principal investment is €500,000. In addition, applicants should budget for government application and residence-permit fees, legal fees and, depending on the case, banking, tax, compliance, translation and other administrative expenses. Family members also create additional application and residence-permit fees.
The process typically begins with eligibility and strategy, followed by the Portuguese tax and banking setup, source-of-funds and compliance procedures, selection and completion of the qualifying investment, preparation of the legal file and submission to AIMA. The applicant is then called, at the appropriate stage, for the required documentation and biometric process before the residence permit is issued.
Processing times depend significantly on AIMA, appointment availability and the individual case, so they should never be presented as guaranteed deadlines. After issuance, renewals require continued compliance with the relevant conditions, including the qualifying investment and minimum-stay requirements while the ARI remains based on that investment.
