What are the biggest legal and investment mistakes people make when pursuing a Portuguese Golden Visa — and how can they be avoided?

Due diligence
An eligible fund can still be wrong for your goals or risk profile.
Structure
Choose one that fully meets the immigration rules, and keep the investment in place.
Documents
Confirm which source-of-funds documents are needed and who is responsible for each step.
US tax
Review tax and reporting with a US tax advisor. For a 401(k) or IRA, also check your plan and custodian’s rules before moving funds.
The full answer
Understand the requirements. Review your circumstances with qualified advisors.
One of the biggest mistakes is treating the Golden Visa as only an immigration decision. If you are committing €500,000, the investment deserves the same due diligence you would apply to any other significant financial decision. A fund can be eligible for the Golden Visa and still be unsuitable for your objectives or risk profile.
Other common problems include selecting a structure that does not fully satisfy the immigration rules, failing to maintain the qualifying investment, weak source-of-funds documentation and using separate advisers who are not coordinating the legal, investment, banking and compliance steps.
For US persons there is an additional cross-border layer. US citizens and resident aliens are generally subject to US tax and reporting rules on worldwide income and foreign financial assets, and some foreign fund structures may create specific US reporting or tax considerations. These issues should be reviewed with appropriately qualified US tax advisers before investing.
